View from inside the cozy reading room in the Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library. Find another view of the inside of this library in this post here (one gets to the reading room via those stairs!). The outside of the library has been recorded quite a few times in these pages; find a recent instance in this post here.
Jefferson Market Garden birdhouse, September 22, 2017
This intriguing birdhouse is hanging in a tree in the Jefferson Market Garden, a wonderful pocket oasis right next to the Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library, which is in the background of this picture. See other pictures of the Jefferson Market Library, in this post here and this post here.

And against such an appropriate palette of colors! Burnt orange, ivory, beige, forest green, maroon … cozy!

A view across the Huntington’s Rothenberg Reading Room on the mezzanine level. Add silence plus that library smell.

Cal Tech’s main library above … and a pretty drinking fountain in the basement of its much smaller humanities library (where I checked out some books with my brand new Cal Tech library card, a courtesy of Cal Tech to official “readers” at the Huntington Library).

Stairs to reference room, Doe Library, June 29, 2015
It’s a little hard to see in this blurry picture, but the steps in this staircase are slightly concave right where foot traffic on them has been heaviest. Climbing them really gives a person a sense of walking in other people’s footsteps!
