Fire at the old home and a charm lost and found (Original Boomerang for January 9, 1921)

The headline story in this issue of the original Boomerang is that there was a fire at the Eno “old home” at 1419 19th St. (See “Boomerang World” tab at this site for link to a map that shows where the old home is in relation to the new one at 2813 Cottage Ave.–or just click this link here. Hint: it’s not far!) As you’ll see, the old home is now the site of King Elementary School (see its site here)! When did the Eno family make the big more from 19th St. to Cottage Ave.? Not all that long ago at the time of this Boomerang issue, it would seem, since they were listed in the 1912 Des Moines City Directory at 19th St. (Note listings for grown-up daughters Enola and Eula … but not for wife Mary!?)

And in the same directory but for 1917 they were listed on Cottage Ave (now Gladice is old enough to be listed, and Enola’s flown!)

All that having been said, it seems that the old home was injured but not destroyed, so that’s a relief!

In other news, Beth has been out skating with Harold White … during which adventure Harold lost and then miraculously found a charm that had been attached to his watch! Fred Eno’s note before this story reads “Beth doesn’t care to sit down,” and his note following it reads “And they do say one is born every minute.” OK … a fool (is born every minute) … fools in love as well, perhaps?
