NYC Gothic, #s 3 and 4

Grace Church, December 5, 2012

Grace Church, December 5, 2012

(Oops! had this ready yesterday but forgot to post it!) Grace [Episcopal] Church: designed by James Renwick Jr. in 1843. Among Renwick’s other claims to fame is St Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th Avenue. Another Grace Church has been mentioned in these pages, Grace United Methodist in Des Moines Iowa; for that post go here; for more on Grace NYC (a national historic landmark!), click here.

While I’m at it, here’s a picture I took the other day of another gothic church; this is the former Washington Square Methodist Episcopal Church; it was converted into apartments in 2004! Before that it had a long and illustrious history: it was built in 1860 and during the Vietnam War earned the nick-name the Peace Church because it was a center of anti-war activism. Read more on its history here.
